A memorial service to celebrate the life of Charles William McMurray is scheduled for Saturday November 14, 2015 at 3:00 at First United Methodist Church in Athens Texas.
Charles was born October 7, 1934 in Trinidad Texas, the only child of Jack and Edna McMurray. After the accidental death of Jack, he was blessed by a loving stepfather Grady Harkins. He was the Valedictorian of his senior class and medaled in the State Track Meet. Charles attended Texas Tech on a track scholarship and received his degree in Architecture. He remained an avid Red Raider throughout his lifetime and left a legacy of eight more spirited Raiders in the family plus a rogue Florida Gator.
Charles was drafted into the US Army after graduation, and after serving he had a long and successful building career throughout the US, primarily in Texas and Florida. Charles was an active member of many Methodist churches, where he served on building committees. He was married to his high school sweetheart Betty McGee McMurray for 56 years.
He had a great love for his family, Texas Tech athletics, his many pets and he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and the Red Raiders play sports. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your local humane society or a charity of your choice.
Survivors include his wife Betty McMurray, son John Todd McMurray and wife Mitzi of Bowie, Texas, daughter Terri McMurray Nieser and husband John of Sugar Land, Texas and daughter Kristi McMurray Askeland and husband Daryl of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. Grandchildren include Lauren McMurray Quisenberry and husband Nathan, Cody Daniel McMurray and wife Stephanie, Eric Charles Nieser, Elise Marie Nieser, Logan Ashton McMurray, Erik Tyler Askeland and Taylor Nicole Askeland. Great-grandchildren are Carter Dean Quisenberry and Evynn Claire McMurray.
