Obituary for Verna Mae Odom (Runnells)

Memorial services for Verna Odom, 80, of Athens, are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2020 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens with Johnny Johnson officiating.

Mrs. Odom passed away November 30, 2020 in Tyler.

Verna Mae Odom was born January 21, 1940 in Kewanee, Illinois, the daughter of Clarence C. Runnells and Mabel (Dutro) Runnells. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Athens and was a devoted homemaker who loved caring for her family. Verna was talented at crocheting, quilting, painting and crafting miniature doll houses. She also loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing, gardening and the mountains.

She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Michele West; grandson, Brian Booth and grandson-in-law, Patrick Blong.

Survivors include husband, Leroy Odom of Athens; children, Darla Sturdivant and wife Melissa of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Loretta Watson and husband Tony of Athens, Jeannie Swanstrom of Saucier, Mississippi; grandchildren, Holly Blong, Crista Mayes, Lisa Greco, Robert Bandy and Cheyenne Abbott, Sarah and Brent Shultz, Adrien Ladner, Steven Breun III, Felicity Swanstrom; great grandchildren, Jamie Shumate, Bryce Greco, Michael Mayes, Trayton Ring, Nora Greco, Kadence Blong, Haley Shumate, Edward Blong, Zaylee Bandy and Karter Shultz.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 4, 2020 from 1-2:00 p.m. at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or a local food bank.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
