Sonja Schafer, 74, of Murchison, passed away October 17, 2019 in Athens.
Sonja Louise (Byron) Schafer was born January 15, 1945 in Athens, Texas, the daughter of Lou T. Byron and Oree Lavell (Hallmark) Byron.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lou and Oree Byron; husband, Samuel LeRoy Schafer; two sisters, Eddie Williams and Judy Prevost; and son, Sammy Schafer.
Sonja was a loving mother and Granny who enjoyed crocheting and watching movies. She was also an avid gardener and collector.
Sonja is survived by children, Susan Davidson and husband Barry of Spring, Deborah Hammond and husband Kenny of Murchison and Pamela Schaefer of Canton; siblings, Peggy Lawrence of Lufkin, Carolyn Duckworth and husband Tom of Canton, Mitsy Morgan and husband David of Lufkin, Kathy Carpenter of Houston, Mike Byron and wife Jane of Magnolia and Karon Tolbert and husband Tony of Athens; seven grandchildren, Mischele Chapman, Jamie Bishop, Amanda Hammond, Stacey Freeman, Tammy Schaefer, Samantha Watkins and Katie Schaefer; and ten great grandchildren, Matthew, Oakley, Ashton, John, Miakoda, Jaden, Jace, Vaellyn, Tate and Tye Carter.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
