Obituary for Sonny Musick

A private graveside service for Sonny Musick, 82, of Athens, will be held at Goodgame Cemetery with Don Barron officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home.

Sonny went to be with his Heavenly Father on November 29, 2020 in Athens.

He was born September 9, 1938 in Athens, the son of Derwood and Lena (McGee) Musick. Sonny lived his entire life in Athens.

On March 7, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, and best friend, Patsy Bice. He went on to graduate from Athens High School in 1957 and after graduation, he made a professional barber. Later he graduated from East Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Science degree in Sociology and Special Education. Sonny was also certified in Special Education Administration. He taught several years at Bel Air and West Elementary Schools. Later he became Director of Special Education for Henderson County Coop for 13 years before retiring in 1996.

As a teenager he boxed in the Golden Gloves and had an impressive record. Sonny planned on becoming a professional boxer but was unable to pursue his dream. As his sons became interested in baseball, he coached Little League for 10 years. In 1968 he carried his team all the way to 4th in the state.

Sonny spent his life for his family, and they could always depend on him for everything. He had a deep love for family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mel Musick; sister, Mary Lou Hardin and devoted uncle Therle “Bubba” Musick.

Sonny is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Patsy Musick of Athens; sons, Gil Musick of Athens, David Musick of Athens; grandchildren, Ryan Musick, Julena Hart, Jamie Rogers, Jana Strange, Melody Savell; great grandchildren, Ryder, Braydon, Connor, Landon, Ty, Matty, Rylan, Fynlee, Cash and Sawyer. He is also survived by his faithful four-legged companions, Roper and Lucky.

Serving as pallbearers will be Clay Tompkins, Marc Robinson, Kenneth Carter and John Creel.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home family.
