Obituary for Dr. Harold Smitson II
A gathering to celebrate the life of Dr. Harold Smitson II will be held from 2-4:00 p.m., Sunday, January 24, 2021 at McNair Farms in Athens.
Dr. Smitson passed away January 21, 2021 in Tyler.
Harold Leroy Smitson II was born February 24, 1948 in Olney, Texas, the son of Harold Leroy Smitson and Dorothy Fern (Guy) Smitson. He graduated high school in the Archer City school system, did his undergraduate work at Midwestern College in Wichita Falls, Texas and received his Doctorate of Medicine from Southwest Medical School in Dallas, all before the age of 22. He began his career in Radiology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, becoming the youngest Radiology resident ever, two years later become a staff Radiologist at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls and then moved to Henderson County in the early 1970’s where he practiced for nearly 50 years. Doc served as Radiologist in multiple locations all over East Texas whether it be putting hundreds of thousands of miles on his car or in the mobile radiology lab he helped set up. He was loved by everyone he came in contact with, whether it be in the medical field or the many, many patients he touched over the years. In his free time he loved to read and spend every possible minute he could with his grandkids, travelling with them on many adventures. Truth be told his grandkids were his life outside of work. He will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother Gary Smitson.
Survivors include his children, Steffanie Smitson of Frisco, Christopher Tinsley and wife Sarah of Athens, Patrick Tinsley and wife Laura of Chatham, Illinois, Meagan Tinsley of Athens; siblings, Homer Robert Smitson of Winnetka, California, Lora Ann Tomlinson of Larue; grandchildren, Seth, Rose, Amelia, Liam, Sean, Quinn, Willow, Bishop, Sutton, Benton; many nieces, nephews, cousins, special friend Paula Godwin and the entire Medical Community.
