Obituary for Aubrey William Cooper

Funeral services for Aubrey W. Cooper, age 93, of Athens, will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2021, at Leagueville Baptist Church in Murchison, Texas. Officiants for the service are Pastor Tom Bragdon, Dr. Galen Cooper, and Reverend Terry Cooper. A private family interment service will follow, burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens, Texas.

Aubrey W. Cooper, Pastor and long- time resident of Athens went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 11, 2021. Born December 13, 1927, Wilbarger County, Texas, the son of the late William R. Cooper and Hettie Templeman Cooper, was united in marriage to Billie Clorene Bevel, April 6, 1946, sharing sixty-one years before her passing in 2007.

Mr. Cooper, a World War II, U. S. Army Veteran, began his walk with the Lord and call to the Gospel Ministry in 1954, Borger, Texas, moved to Athens, Texas, in 1974, where he served for twenty-years as Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church. His ministry of sixty-seven years included service in eight pastorates with tenures in New Mexico, Missouri and Texas.

His commitment to Christ is highlighted by the organization and establishment of new churches including, Riverview Baptist Church, Borger, Texas and the Fellowship Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas, as well as preaching engagements throughout the United States and countries including Mexico, Canada, and Africa. Pastor Cooper was instrumental in the formation of the Independent Baptist Encampment and until his death mentored pastors and missionaries who continue in world-wide ministry. Upon his retirement from full-time ministry Reverend Cooper served as Interim Pastor in both Alvin and Brazoria, Texas, and Minister of Outreach, Leagueville Baptist Church, Murchison, Texas.

He is survived by one sister, Rose Laia, Athens, Tx. His children and their spouses: Terry and Marcia Cooper, Athens, Tx., Karen Parker, Athens, Tx., Kenneth (Pete) and Jenny Cooper, Cross Roads, Tx., Galen and Lania Cooper, Spring, Tx. Grandchildren and spouses: Kristi and Jack Bragg, Toby and Christina Cooper, Amy and Dave Chadbourne, Bradley and Karen Sue Parker, Stefanie Parker, Chad and Christyn Cooper, Kaylie and Eric Comer, MeKenzie and Kris Flynn, Brice and Hailey Cooper, Carson Cooper, Zacheriah Jalboush, Jansyn Hughes and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and twin infant siblings.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers; Honorary pallbearers are Pastors R.A. Smith and Kevin Alexander.
