Alvin Briggs

It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the passing of Alvin Briggs Jr., 65, of Malakoff, Texas, who succumbed to cancer at his home in Malakoff surrounded by his family on Friday June 1, 2018.

Alvin was born to Alice Smith and Alvin Briggs on January 21st, 1953 at home in Columbus, Arkansas. He spent the majority of his childhood in Magnolia and Stamps, Arkansas before moving to Dallas, Texas. It was in Dallas where Alvin was introduced to his wife, Judy O. (Jackson) Briggs. The two were married on June 15, 1996 in Desoto, Texas. Alvin worked as a truck driver for over 30 years before going to work for the City of Malakoff. There Alvin began as a lead man. With hard work and determination, he moved his way up to street supervisor before retiring in February, after 20 years of service. Alvin was honored for his years of excellent service with a key to the city of Malakoff on Friday, May 25, 2018. Alvin was a faithful man of God and this was evident through the way he simply carried himself and ministered to others. He was a member of Life Fellowship Church in Athens, Texas.
Alvin was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed building, creating, and fixing things but most importantly he loved God and he loved his family. While a man of few words, he possessed a witty sense of humor and left a lasting impression on so many people that came across his path. Alvin was a loving, humble, and selfless man. He will be missed dearly.

He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Willie Dale Smith, and his sister Vera Mae Smith.

Alvin is survived by his wife of 22 years, Judy Briggs and his children, Yolonda Hicks, Quitibilla Lyons, Charles (Shenika) Lyons and Achley Lyons. He is also survived by his siblings Tom Briggs Alice Fay Hall, Ollie Mae Briggs, Barbara Ann Briggs, Perry Briggs, Diana Ray, Wayne Briggs, and LJ Briggs. Alvin will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brother-and sister-in-law’s, extended family and dear friends.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Charles Lyons, Paul Redic, Perry Briggs, Wayne Briggs, Michael Hall, Chris Hall, Bernard Hall, Willie Hall, Nick Briggs and Calvin Jackson Jr.

A viewing will be held on Saturday June 9, 2018 from 6-8:00 p.m. at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.
